Reggae Rise Up is one of North America's most popular and anticipated festivals. The show initially launched in 2015 as a one-day reggae fest with roughly eight to nine performers. As the years went on, the festival continued to deliver amazing artists each year. It eventually grew into a two-day festival. By 2023, Reggae Rise Up had become a four-day spectacle and expanded into four cities, including St. Petersburg, Las Vegas, Utah, and Baltimore. In fact, the festival is so popular that studies have been made to explore its cultural and economic impact on the City of St. Petersburg. The study found that the festival brings 23 million dollars worth of business annually to the city. With over 20,000 attendees from all over the world – some fans came from as far as Japan, Australia, and New Zealand – the local business thrived on fans’ spending on food, drinks, lodging, shopping, and whatnot.
2015 Reggae Rise Up was launched with reggae rock outfit Rebelution as the headliner. The show also featured performances from roots reggae outfit Steel Pulse, Collie Buddz, Zion 1, and more. During this time, the show was held in Raymond James Stadium. By year 2, the venue has moved to Vinoy Park. The 2016 festival welcomes a whole new line-up consisting of Dirty Heads, Tribal Seeds, Stick Figure, and Fortunate Youth, among others.
With the festival’s popularity on the rise, it was only logical to add a second day to this much-awaited shindig. Year 3’s line-up welcomed the return of Dirty Heads, Steel Pulse, and Fortunate Youth, but the festival saw the debut of Slightly Stoopid, Iration, Thre Green, and more on the big stage. In 2018, the organizers added another day, making Reggae Rise Up a whole weekend spectacle lasting from Friday to Sunday. The event saw the return of Tribal Seeds and Rebelution. Meanwhile, the new headliners included Damian Marley and Soja.
Over the years, the line-up comprises reggae powerhouses, independent bands, award-winning artists, and up-and-coming groups. In 2019, Ziggy Marley and Method Man & Redman made their debut at the festival. Reggae Rise Up took a break the following year at the height of the pandemic. However, they made their phenomenal return in 2021 and featured a special performance by Stephen Marley. The following year, the line-up included Grammy Award-winning reggae artists Shaggy for the first time. Last year, Reggae Rise Up welcomed 311, Dispatch, Subline with Rome, Wiz Khalifa, and Koffee into their string of performers.
